More Power. Less Alive.
The Hidden Leadership Cost Organizations Can No Longer Afford to Ignore.
For decades, organizations have invested heavily in developing better leaders.
They’ve taught strategy.
Communication.
Performance.
Influence.
Executive presence.
Resilience.
Decision-making.
Those investments matter.
They’ve helped people become more capable, more knowledgeable, and more effective.
But I’ve become interested in a different question.
Has becoming more powerful also helped leaders become more alive?
Because those are not always the same thing.
A leader can become more accomplished while quietly becoming more disconnected from themselves.
More influential.
Less present.
More responsible.
Less discerning.
More productive.
Less alive.
That tension is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
⸻
We Measure Performance. We Rarely Measure the Person Producing It.
Organizations measure outcomes.
Revenue.
Engagement.
Retention.
Productivity.
Performance.
Those metrics matter.
But they don’t tell us what it is costing the human being producing them.
A leader can exceed every expectation while slowly becoming separated from the very capacities exceptional leadership depends upon.
Presence.
Discernment.
Creativity.
Curiosity.
Vitality.
Judgment.
When those capacities begin to diminish, performance often hides the decline—for a while.
⸻
Hidden Collapse Doesn’t Begin with Burnout.
Burnout is visible.
Hidden Collapse is not.
It begins much earlier.
A leader overrides her intuition because the meeting needs her.
She carries emotional labor no one recognizes.
She absorbs uncertainty so everyone else feels safe.
She becomes the person everyone depends upon.
Eventually, carrying becomes her identity.
The organization continues benefiting from her capacity.
She quietly pays the price.
Not because she lacks resilience.
Because no human being can indefinitely override themselves without consequence.
⸻
Leadership Is More Than Output.
Leadership has never been only about what a person produces.
It has always depended on the quality of the person producing it.
Clear judgment.
Wise decisions.
Healthy relationships.
Strategic thinking.
Executive presence.
These capacities cannot simply be extracted.
They must be renewed.
The strongest organizations of the future will understand that leadership is not built by maximizing human output.
It is built by protecting human capacity.
⸻
More Power Should Create More Life.
This is the question I continue returning to.
What if leadership didn’t slowly consume the person doing it?
What if greater responsibility produced greater clarity?
Greater vitality?
Greater discernment?
Greater presence?
What if power expanded a woman’s life instead of narrowing it?
That isn’t idealism.
It’s sustainable leadership.
⸻
The Competitive Advantage We Haven’t Been Measuring.
Artificial intelligence will accelerate information.
Technology will accelerate execution.
But neither can replace a leader’s discernment.
Or wisdom.
Or presence.
Or the ability to recognize what no dashboard can measure.
The organizations that thrive won’t simply develop smarter leaders.
They’ll develop leaders who remain fully themselves while carrying extraordinary responsibility.
That is a competitive advantage.
⸻
A Different Leadership Question.
Perhaps the future of leadership isn’t asking,
“How do we get more from our people?”
Perhaps it’s asking,
“How do we create environments where exceptional people no longer have to lose themselves in order to lead?”
Because when power costs a woman herself…
Everyone pays.
When power becomes renewable…
Everyone benefits.
